What revision rhinoplasty is

Revision rhinoplasty is a second operation on a nose that has already been operated on. It corrects problems left by the first surgery, like an irregular hump, a twisted tip, a nostril that sits wrong, or trouble breathing. It is a specialty of its own, not a repeat of the first procedure.

Why it is harder than the first surgery

A first rhinoplasty works with untouched anatomy. A revision works with scar tissue, reduced cartilage and a nose whose support has already been changed. The structures the surgeon needs are thinner and less predictable. That is why revision surgery takes more planning, more time and more experience than a primary rhinoplasty.

What it can correct

A revision can fix a visible irregularity on the bridge, reposition a tip that healed off-center, straighten a twist, and improve breathing by opening a narrowed airway. In some cases the surgeon adds cartilage to rebuild support that was removed the first time. The goal is a nose that looks natural and works well.

Timing matters

You should wait until the nose has fully healed before planning a revision, usually about a year after the first surgery. Recovery and what to expect

Recovery is similar to a primary rhinoplasty. Expect a splint for about a week, swelling and bruising, and a final shape that settles over several months. Because revision work can involve more dissection, some patients swell a little longer than they did the first time.
