Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

Facelift candidacy by age: what a facelift does in your 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s, and what matters more than your age. Dr. Diego Franco, board-certified plastic surgeon.

When to consider a facelift

There is no right age for a facelift, only the right timing for your face. What changes across the decades is how much lift you need and which technique fits.

In your 40s

This is when the first real signs show up: early jowls, a jawline that is starting to soften, and a tired look that makeup no longer hides. Most patients in their 40s do not need a full deep plane lift yet. A mini facelift or a MACS lift is often the right answer, and research suggests that treating early changes while the skin still has elasticity produces high long-term satisfaction.

In your 50s

The jowls are more defined and the neck often starts to show loose skin. This is the decade where most patients get the biggest, most durable result from a full facelift, usually a deep plane lift with a neck lift. The skin still responds well, and the lift lasts 10 to 15 years.

In your 60s

The skin is thinner and the deeper structures have moved further, so a deep plane lift remains the workhorse, but the surgeon has to be more careful about skin quality and healing. Results are still excellent, and many patients in their 60s combine a facelift with eyelid surgery for the best return.

In your 70s and beyond

Age matters less than health. A facelift is safe in a healthy 70-year-old and can still make a big difference, but candidacy depends on blood pressure, medications, and skin elasticity. Dr. Franco screens carefully and will tell you honestly if the risks outweigh the benefit.

What matters more than age

  • Skin elasticity
  • Bone structure and how much the midface has dropped
  • Whether you smoke or have uncontrolled blood pressure
  • Prior surgery or non-surgical treatments
  • Realistic expectations
